Charlestown History



Charlestown was first settled in 1625 by Thomas and Jane Walford. It later became the first capitol of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Charlestown was the site of the first major engagment of the Revolutionary War in 1775 where Paul Revere began his famous ride. The Battle of Bunker Hill took place on Breed's Hill and was close to Boston proper.

The Bunker Hill Monument, located in Charlestown offers one of the best views of the city of Boston from the Charles River to the Boston Harbor. Later, in 1797 the USS Constitution was also commissioned afloat in Charlestown.

Description of Charlestown



Charlestown is an area of Boston located on a peninsula between the Charles and the Mystic Rivers. The close proximity of Charlestown to the downtown Boston area makes Charlestown an excellent choice for renting in Boston. The film with Ben Afleck called, “The Town” resembles the ambience of Charlestown living. The neighborhood is convenient to Logan International Airport and is served by the MBTA Orange Line for easy transportation to and from downtown.

Residents of Charlestown



Charlestown residents are mixed upper and middle class. Much of the culture in the area is dominated by the working class Irish-Americans. Charlestown is full of culture and the recent gentrification process that took place has changed Charlestown from an Irish Mob dominated area into an upper middle class residential area that is home to a relatively diverse community.

Charlestown apartment rentals are typically the red brick, row house style that are similar to the look of the homes in Beacon Hill. Charlestown rentals range in price based largely on the size of the apartment rental and on the amenities located within the rental and the building. Most Charlestown apartments for rent are priced over $1,000 per month with the average Charlestown apartment rental price being closer to $2,500 or more.

Fun Stuff to Do in Charlestown




Charlestown is home to the Bunker Hill Community College which is on the site which formerly housed the Charlestown State Prison which closed in 1955. There is much to do in the area, especially with downtown Boston being just a stones throw (or a short Orange Line trip) away from Charlestown.

The Tavern on the Water features reasonably priced food and drinks at the Charlestown Shipyard. This restaurant also offers a pleasant view of the Boston skyline across the harbor and is a must see for anyone thinking of moving into the Charlestown Boston area. Another excellent restaurant to visit is the Warren Tavern Restaurant which was rebuilt in 1780. This restaurant serves American foods in a cozy atmosphere that carries traditional ambience.
