HistoryThe western area of Bay Village was once part of the body of water that is now well known as Back Bay just west of the Boston Neck isthmus. Also once known as South Bay, the Bay Village was landfilled by a developer in the 1820s. Throughout the history of Bay Village, the neighborhood has been known as various names including Church Street District, South Cove and Kerry Village. The South End and Back Bay were created by continued landfill which caused many streets in Bay Village to be raised as high as 18 feet during the mid to late 1800s. Evidence of such raised streets is still seen today as some basement windows on Fayette Street are significantly noticeable. The location of many arches that once opened to horse walks that ran under the houses to stables in the rear. DescriptionBay Village is one of the smallest neighborhoods in the city of Boston but it has a very friendly and inviting atmosphere. A developer by the name of Ephraim Marsh created Bay Village by a landfill in the early 1820s. The neighborhood has been known as Church Street District, South Cove and Kerry Village in the past. Centrally located, Bay Village is home to several restaurants as well as the Theater District and various other cultural attractions. Bay Village may be one of the lesser known neighborhoods in Boston but this small area still boasts more than 2,00 residents that call Bay Village home. The neighborhood is backed by Back Bay, Park Square and the neighborhood of South End, Boston. One way streets and a non-grid arrangement makes the neighborhood quiet and relatively sparse to vehicular traffic. ResidentsResidents of Bay Village were once primarily middle to lower middle class but have recently edged closer to the middle upper class since the early 1990s. Bay Village has residents are mostly mixed male and female with a median income of at least $30,000. The Bay Village area maintains a tight nit community and residents are very eclectic. An interesting mix of singles, married couples, families with children, ages from young to elderly, students and professionals all call the Bay Village, Boston area home. Close proximity to parks and restaurants makes Bay Village an excellent place to live. Residents of all ages, races and ethnicity can happily make Bay Village their home. Early residents were typically the engineers and builders that developed the Beacon Hill area. They moved in to Bay Village to work close by at Beacon Hill building rowhouses and soon bagan development of a smaller scale model of the Beacon Hill area in Bay Village. Rental HousingMany of the rental houses in Bay Village resemble small versions of the townhouses that are seen in Beacon Hill. This comes as a result of the early settlers who were the craftspeople that developed Beacon Hill and moved in to Bay Village to have their own local residences. Mostly made up of townhouses that were constructed in the late 1800s, Bay Village rentals offer a small scale version of the upscale mansions that are found in nearby Beacon Hill. Single family homes in Bay Village are significantly lower in price than nearby Beacon Hill. A home in Bay Village would have a sale price of about $800,000 versus a similar style home in Beacon Hill that may sell for about $1.7 million strictly because of the difference in location and surrounding property prices. Bay Village rentals are scarce but they can be found for significantly less monthly payments than some nearby neighborhoods in Boston. Fun StuffBay Village is a very small neighborhood in Boston that actually only makes up about a quarter square mile. There's not a lot of notable things to do directly in Bay Village but this small Boston neighborhood is very close in proximity to many things to do in the neighboring areas. Theaters are very close by and residents have the ability to walk to the theater from their Bay Village homes. For those who enjoy eclectic lifestyles, the bohemian type that are interested in acting, musicals, and theater, Bay Village is an excellent place to live with plenty to do. |
