The Longwood Medical area of Boston is a large medical campus that is centered on Longwood Avenue and runs from Huntington Avenue to the Riverway. The Longwood area actually runs along the Fenway and Kenmore neighborhoods as well as the Mission Hill neighborhood. Longwood Medical area is also known for the Harvard Medical School and various other medical facilities that are located in the area.

Harvard teaching hospitals are located in the Longwood medical area and various other museums, colleges and research centers that are not related to Harvard or to medical teaching are also located in this area as well. The most prominent hospitals and medical research institutions in the Longwood area include Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Brigham and Women's Hospital, Children's Hospital Boston, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Joslin Diabetes Center.

The Harvard School of Dental Medicine, the Harvard School of Public Health and the Harvard Medical School are all located in the Longwood Medical area. This area is also home to Northeastern University, the Wentworth Institute of Technology and the prominent Boston Latin School. Various other colleges and Universities are also located in the Longwood Medical area.

Longwood is served by various transportation options. The MBTA Green Line D branch has a Longwood stop and the E branch has a Longwood Medical Area stop both of which land directly in the Longwood area. Additionally, the Longwood area is serviced by public bus routes and shuttles that typically service the Cambridge campuses of Harvard and MIT. The shuttles are generally for affiliated personnel that are connected with the colleges or medical schools.

The Longwood Medical area is home to 21 different health care and research institutes as well as educational facilities. This area is the largest employment area in the city of Boston aside from the Downtown Boston area. The area has very limited residential buildings but nearby Mission Hill provides many residential housing options for those who work or attend school in Longwood.

Most of the housing just outside of Longwood is rural freestanding homes that were built in the early years by wealthy landowners. Although there usually aren't many Longwood rentals there is an abundance of Mission Hill rentals that are primarily traditional brick rowhouses. Additional housing options just outside of Longwood Medical area include condos and duplexes or two family homes. The area inside Longwood is generally institutional so in most cases it's best and easiest to find housing in nearby areas such as Mission Hill, Fenway or Kenmore.
