Leather District

Leather District is a neighborhood in Boston that is located just between the Financial District and Chinatown. Many actually combine the area of the Leather District with information about Chinatown as the areas are both so close and the Leather District is actually considered to be in Chinatown. Another common name for the Leather District and what the locals often call the area is “LD.”

The Leather District area is an area that is defined by the boundaries of Kneeland Street on the south, Essex Street on the north, Lincoln Street to the west and Atlantic Avenue to the east. In early times, this area was dominated and actually thrived on the leather industry hence the name Leather District. Today, the Leather District is described as, “a loose juxtaposition of anonymous souls, going about their own business, in a quirky two block radius in downtown Boston.”

The Leather District offers locals a large selection of Asian restaurants and bakeries as well as a unique mix of eclectic culture. The area is made up of old leather factories that have been transformed into loft style residential homes and some commercial buildings. The Leather District boasts a historic appeal that, since transformation, now offers 21st century amenities. Various restaurants and cafes line the area which also offers some unique shopping as well.

Leather District rentals are primarily loft style apartments which have been converted. Leather District rentals are typically in the price range of about $1200-$1500 per month for a one bedroom and one bathroom apartment. Local transportation options include the MBTA Green, Orange and Red T Lines as well as MBTA buses making this area an easy access hotspot.

The Leather District features many classical revival style buildings most of which were built prior to 1900. The Leather District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983 and remains a prime location for thousands of individuals who call this district in Boston home. The Romanesque style architecture and loft style housing makes the Leather District a desirable area for those who wish to live in historic housing with modern amenities.
