Back Bay HistoryBack Bay was actually under water when Boston was originally founded, hence it's name “Back Bay.” The are was the site of the biggest urban renewal project America had ever seen at the time when the Charles River Basin was being filled but upon completion, the landfill more than doubled the area of Boston's central district. The Back Bay area was designated a National Historic District in 1973. Most of the residences had long been completed at that time as Back Bay was mostly built by 1910. The area is now home to many exclusive stores and restaurants as well as sidewalk cafes and art galleries making Back Bay a truly eclectic place to live, work and play. Description of Back BayBack Bay is bound on the North by the Charles River, to the south by the Massachusetts Turnpike, to the East by Arlington Street and Park Square and on the west by Charlesgate East. Back Bay was designed with the 19th century renovation of Paris in mind and therefore the roads within the neighborhood were laid out in wide, tree lined avenues that were ordered along a grid in alphabetical order such that Arlington street is before Berkeley Street and Clarendon and Dartmouth and so on. Residents of Back BayResidents of Bach Bay are typically upper middle class. The area is home to some of the most exclusive stores and housing making it difficult for many to afford unless in the upper middle class to upper class income levels. Back Bay residents are typically wealthy business people as the area is primarily filled with upper class and very expensive housing, luxury shopping and high rise buildings. Rentals in Back BayBack Bay apartment rentals are typically luxury accommodations that are priced well above $2,000 per month. The average 2 bedroom Back Bay apartment for rent is priced around $3,000 but these prices can easily skyrocket above $5,000 or more. Penthouses in Back Bay can rent for $7,000 or more a month but often feature amenities such as Jacuzzi tubs, prewired surround sound, custom cabinetry and stainless appliances. Fun Things to do in Back BayBack Bay is home to the Hatch Shell concert venue on the Charles River Esplanade. This neighborhood is also the summer home to the Boston Pops Orchestra and a location where the 4th of July fireworks display is regularly televised on national TV. Back Bay features many sidewalk cafes and restaurants. The upper class luxury accommodations in the Back Bay area lend the area to many art galleries and exclusive stores that are centered around Newbury Street.
